The municipality of Torres Novas dates back to the early days of the nationality.
It was conquered from the Moors by Dom Afonso Henriques in 1148, having its headquarters received a Charter in 1190, by Dom Sancho I. But in I2nd, 3rd and 4th century this region was already inhabited by the Romans who left vestiges in the Villa Cardilium.
